As Gabriele Columbro and the Linux Foundation Europe have recently highlighted, Europe has a critical need for digital sovereignty. To achieve true independence and control over our digital infrastructure, we cannot rely solely on consuming technology; we must be active creators and maintainers of the open source ecosystems that power the world.
However, a major obstacle stands in our way.
Many talented individual contributors and potential maintainers want to step up but often lack the specific knowledge or experience to handle complex, real-world situations. Whether it’s navigating governance disputes, managing license compliance, or building community consensus, these skills are rarely taught in coding bootcamps.
That is why I created the opensource-europe.org simulator.
My goal is to provide simple, easy, and gamified ways to learn these essential skills. By simulating real-world scenarios, we can bridge the gap between “knowing how to code” and “knowing how to lead” in an open source project.
Try the Simulator. I will be publishing a new one every week, covering different aspects of open source maintenance and strategy.
I invite you to try out the current simulation at opensource-europe.org and let me know in the thread: What topics would you like to explore next?
Let’s build a stronger, more sovereign European open source ecosystem, one simulation at a time.
